Could you please describe your storage type in more details (flash card, local HDD/SSD, or network storage /NAS/, if NAS - what protocol type is used, SMB or Apple ?)
Also, please try to run FRV with folders panel disabled. To do so, open Terminal window and enter the command (copy-paste from here than Enter):

defaults write com.libraw-llc.FastRawViewer Prefs.DisableFoldersOnStart 1
This will disable Folders panel (you may re-open it by F7 key). The problem, most likely, will disappear.
