Ok, thanks for the explanation. So maybe apart from the Folder panel being open there might also have been some background process that slowed disk access down like the Spotlight indexer which could explain why I all of a sudden couldn't reproduce anymore.
Thanks for the quick and very helpful response, I appreciate it a lot. It looks like there are some things I can look into on my side to avoid this from happening since I think this is a great piece of software and I want it to be a part of my photo work-flow.
